HBO Max App: Where to download to iOS, Apple TV, PS4, and streaming devices

The HBO Max app is finally here. This is because HBO Max's compatible devices are, as far as I can remember, surprisingly incomplete for a major service.

Before I can watch Rick and Morty or browse the Studio Ghibli library, I need the HBO Max app. So I found all the necessary download links for you at ...... And maybe which platforms are still waiting for the HBO Max app.

Here is a comprehensive list of where you can download the HBO Max app for your device. It is worth noting that many platforms are replacing the HBO Now app with the HBO Max app. More details are provided in the PS4 section.

The iPhone typically gets the app for the main service on day one, and HBO Max is no exception; it is also being released for the iPad and Apple TV (the only standalone streaming box that currently has HBO Max).

If you try to download it and it says you've already downloaded it before, you may notice that HBO and Apple seem to have replaced the HBO Now app with HBO Max.

Yes, Android folks can also get HBO Max, just like the iPhone, and the download page/URL appears to be the old home of the HBO Now app. And yes, HBO Max will work on Android tablets; HBO says it will also work on phones and slates running Android 5 (Android Lollipop) or later.

All three major desktop platforms support HBO Max, but no app yet; all Chromebooks appear to be supported, but Mac support is limited to devices running macOS 10.10 Yosemite or later All PCs running Windows 7 or later should load HBO Max as well, HBO states.

HBO and Amazon were unable to meet the release date. We reflected on the last second deal that brought Disney Plus to the Fire TV stick and thought this might be possible, but it was a no-go. Eventually, HBO Max landed on Amazon's platform in November 2020.

More surprising than the lack of a Fire TV app was the lack of an HBO Max Roku channel; Strategy Analytics' 2019 report that 30% of new TV streaming devices sold in the US run Roku is shared, so this was a big hole.

Thankfully, the HBO Max Roku app/channel finally launched in December, just before "Wonder Woman 1984" was streamed on Roku.

This was a bit confusing. When I booted up my PlayStation 4 this morning and searched for HBO Max in the PlayStation Store, I found the correct icon with the wrong caption: it had the HBO Max logo but said HBO Now.

But when I downloaded the app and found that it was the correct HBO Max app, all was well enough. This feels similar to the iOS and Android apps above that use the HBO Now URL. No doubt the name will be corrected before the first day is over.

We cannot link to the Smart TV app store, so please take our basic advice for downloading the Smart TV app: open the app store on your Samsung Smart TV (there should be a dedicated button on your remote control), click the search icon and type HBO Max on the remote control. Then scroll down to the Apps section of the results and click on HBO Max.

When you open the HBO Max app on your iPhone, you will see a cast icon in the upper left corner; tap it if you want to cast HBO Max to your TV.
