Xiaomi's stunning quad curved waterfall phone makes the Galaxy S21 look boring

Xiaomi's new "quad-curve waterfall display" is the future of smartphone design. At least according to Xiaomi.

Its new concept phone screen wraps almost the entire side of the phone. Not only does it look great, but it has a "port-free unibody design," with no buttons or ports. It's enough to make even a great phone like the Samsung Galaxy S21 look old-fashioned.

But the bezels are still there. In these rendered images and videos, you can see that the edges of the display are not perfectly aligned at the corners. This is similar to how the Huawei P40 Pro managed its own quad-curved display, albeit less extreme.

Xiaomi is very proud of this curved display, which, according to the press release, was achieved after thousands of iterations and with the help of "in-house developed glass processing equipment, thermal bending under high temperature and pressure at 800°C, four different polishing tools and up to 10 more complex polishing procedures."

Such a concept is quite different from an actual working, purchasable cell phone. However, a Xiaomi representative who spoke to The Verge claimed that an actual prototype of this phone is being tested at Xiaomi. So it may not be long before we see a real quad-curved display from Xiaomi.

The biggest concern with such a display is practicality. It would be cool to have controls and text spill over the sides, but how does one prevent accidental touches on a four-sided waterfall phone like this one?

The lack of ports means that everything on this phone needs to be wireless, including wireless charging. Fortunately, Xiaomi already showed off Mi Air Charge last week, a charging system that allows the phone to charge without touching the charging pad as it does now.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is looking forward to the new Mi 11, which boasts a 6.8-inch 120Hz display, Snapdragon 888 chipset, and 108MP main camera, and this new flagship smartphone line has already been announced in China, while in Europe release event will be held on February 8.
