Cameras figure to be a focal point in this year's iPhone 13 update as Apple looks to jump over the advances made with the Samsung Galaxy S21 model. And Cupertino could do so by enhancing the ultra-wide-angle lens on its next flagship.

This is according to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who noted in a research note discovered by MacRumors that an enhanced ultra-wide-angle lens would improve the iPhone 13's low-light photography.

Kuo based his findings on lens validation conducted by Chinese company Sunny Optical for its five-element iPad camera lens. From that process, Apple learned how to enhance the low-light performance of the ultra-wide camera that the iPhone 13 is said to feature. And that camera is expected to have a 7-element lens. In general, the more elements, the better the camera.

Kuo noted that shipment of the lenses could begin as early as this quarter, leaving about 15% of the components needed for any iPhone model Apple decides to pursue first, with increased production to follow later.

The part that no one seems to agree on? Which 13 iPhone models will have the upgraded camera lens.

Leaker Jon Prosser tackled a series of iPhone 13 rumors on YouTube. He seems convinced that all iPhone 13 models will feature an upgraded camera. Prosser believes that only the ultra-wide lens will be changed and will instead be given f/1.8 optics. He does not, however, expect the iPhone 13 to have a periscope zoom lens. That may actually happen with the iPhone 14 in 2022.

Previously, a pair of Barclays analysts claimed that the iPhone 13's ultrawide lens would have an f/1.8 aperture instead of f/2.4. The report also claims that the iPhone 13 Pro will feature the same zoom lens as the iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 65mm focal length and f/2.2 aperture, offering 2.5x optical zoom. This is slightly higher than the optical zoom of the iPhone 12 Pro.

Still, much about the iPhone 13 remains up in the air, including whether it will be called so or whether it will be substituted by the iPhone 12s.

Following tradition, Apple is not forthcoming about its plans for 2021. However, if they do release a new phone, it is very likely that it will not be a complete overhaul, but more modest upgrades here and there.
