Nokia 1.4 is an amazingly cheap Android phone — here's what you get

If you're looking for a cheap Android phone, the new £89 (about $120) Nokia 1.4 might be worth a closer look.

Based on the Nokia 1.3, HMD's new budget handset offers a fresh design, a dual-camera setup, and a 6.51-inch HD+ display that is slightly larger than the previous model. It also ditches the face-unlock security system in favor of a capacitive rear fingerprint scanner.

Considering that the Nokia 1.4 is designed as an entry-level phone, its internals are modest at best. It is powered by the low-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 chipset, which can be paired with 1GB, 2GB, or 3GB of RAM. Internal storage options include 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, expandable up to 128GB with a microSD card.

Don't expect this phone to catch up without being chosen as the best gaming phone. However, it will be fine for everyday tasks as long as you don't have a large number of apps open.

The Nokia 1.4 features a dual rear camera setup with a pre-installed version of Google's Camera Go app. The main sensor is 8MP, while the secondary sensor is 2MP and offers macro capabilities. [On the front, the Nokia 1.4 features a 5MP camera for video calls and selfies. Nokia has always offered solid smartphone cameras, although they are far from groundbreaking. Therefore, the Nokia 1.4 could punch above its meager price point in terms of budget smartphone photography.

HMD claims a battery life of two days for the Nokia 1.4, which is impressive compared to most modern smartphones. Presumably, it will not consume battery power at speed due to its low-end specs.

The Nokia 1.4 also follows the line of rugged Nokia phones, and HMD emphasizes that this phone is designed to "withstand drops from household surfaces all day long."

The phone features a headphone jack and a dedicated Google Assistant button. It currently ships with the Android 10 Go Edition operating system preinstalled, but users can update to Android 11 after purchase.

The Nokia 1.4 will be available for purchase in March in three different colors: fjord (bright blue), charcoal (black), and dusk (dark purple).
