A secret feature of Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra has been revealed, explaining how the display of the company's newest flagship phone looks beautiful without draining the battery.

Samsung Display, Samsung's display development and manufacturing division, unveiled a new OLED technology that significantly improves efficiency. They provided details about this new type of display and revealed that the S21 Ultra will be the first device to feature this panel.

The biggest advantage is battery life. Samsung claims that this new display consumes 16% less power than standard OLED panels due to its "luminous efficiency". This results in several hours of extended phone life, which may explain the S21 Ultra's superior battery performance in custom TG battery tests.

Other benefits of the new material include "wide color gamut, high brightness, HDR, and outdoor visibility," according to Samsung's press release.

Another key display technology used in the S21 Ultra, LTPO, also helps. This allows the display to dynamically change the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the intended use at the time, saving power. For example, playing a game will set the refresh rate to 120 Hz, but if the user returns to the home screen and does not touch the phone, the system will tell the phone to lower the refresh rate.

The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus use a similar technology called LTPS. The dynamic refresh rate remains the same, but only drops to 48 Hz.

Samsung's next flagship smartphone will likely be the Galaxy Note 21, Galaxy Z Fold 3, or Galaxy Z Flip 3. It is a reasonable assumption that at least some of these devices will feature this new display, and given the workmanship of the S21 Ultra, there is a good chance that these phones will rank in the Best Android Phone or Best Overall Phone rankings as soon as they are released.
