Google Pixel is getting a little-known iPhone feature in a future update.

The double-tap feature was first announced in the initial release of the Android 11 Developer Preview. However, the double-tap feature was removed at the time of release; according to information seen by 9to5Google, double-tap will officially debut on Pixel phones in Android 12.

Android 12 should also include a new feature called App Pairs, which we have all the information on below.

The gestures are codenamed "Columbus," after Jesse Eisenberg's character in the movie "Zombieland," and will allow users to launch Google Assistant, take screenshots, pause or resume playback, open the notification shade open a notification shade, open a view of recent apps, etc.

Apparently, the double tab in the Android 11 beta version was too sensitive. This time, users can adjust their phones to recognize stronger taps. Apple fans need not worry, as the back-tap feature is already in iOS 14.

Google has not announced a developer preview of Android 12. However, given that the Android 11 developer preview was released in February 2020, Android 12 should be available within a few months.

Columbus is not the only feature reportedly being introduced in Android 12, as is App Pairs, which will allow users to launch two apps simultaneously. Such a feature has been available on Samsung and LG phones, but will be more widely available in Android 12.

According to 9to5Google, this feature is technically already available in Android 11, but is clumsy to work. Google aims to fix this in Android 12.

With the growing popularity of folding and dual-screen phones, it is now up to manufacturers to create custom software that allows for easy launch of paired apps. We expect App Pairs to be introduced in the Android 12 developer preview, which will be announced within the next few weeks. However, as is usual with beta launches, not all features will make it into the final build.
