iPhone13 leak just revealed 3 big upgrades

We expect Apple to bring many upgrades to the iPhone 13. And new leaked information is giving us a glimpse of what is coming.

Based on information from "industry sources," DigiTimes claims that Apple's next iPhone will not only take the best photography features of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and make them available across the entire next-generation iPhone series, but will also finally shrink the display notch The company claims that the display notch will eventually shrink.

We have been unable to confirm these sources, and given that Apple is notoriously tight-lipped about its iPhone plans, we should take this leak with a pinch of salt. However, here is a new upgrade that is said to be coming to the iPhone 13.

Perhaps the biggest change to the iPhone 13, and one that many Apple fans have been waiting for, is a smaller display notch.

From the iPhone X to the recent iPhone 12 Pro, Apple has kept the same size notch despite other phone makers adopting smaller notches and punch-hole selfie cameras. Apple needs the extra notch space to accommodate all the sensor technology needed for Face ID, which is more secure than the face-scan biometrics of Android phones.

By combining the currently separate infrared illuminator, sensor, and dot projector into a single module, Apple can shrink the iPhone 13's notch. The reduction of two sensors means that the notch could be much narrower on the next iPhone.

The sensor for the selfie camera will also change, reportedly upgrading from a five-segment lens to a six-segment lens, which will help reduce small distortions in the image caused by light passing through the camera lens.

Currently limited to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, DigiTimes reports that the LiDAR scanner could be included in all iPhone 13 models.

By using lasers to allow the camera system to more accurately determine distance and depth, LiDAR scanners could lead to photos with a greater sense of depth, especially in low light. For those who like to take portrait photos with cleverly blurred backgrounds, LiDAR could be a great boon. We certainly found the iPhone 12 Pro to take great portrait photos.

LiDAR can also help provide a better augmented reality experience thanks to better depth perception. This should allow AR objects to be placed in a more realistic environment. If all iPhone 13 models are equipped with LiDAR scanners, developers will be motivated to create more AR apps and Apple will enhance the iPhone's AR and LiDAR augmentation capabilities.

On the back of the phone, all iPhone 13 models will likely feature Apple's sensor-shift image stabilization system. Currently, only the iPhone 12 Pro Max uses this feature. Given that this model is at the top of our best camera phone rankings, it will be exciting to see one of its secret weapons featured on all iPhone 13 models.

Image stabilization is an important feature added to cell phone cameras to avoid shaky-looking pictures that occur naturally with the slightest movement of the user's hand. All modern cell phones use electronic image stabilization (EIS), while some use optical image stabilization (OIS).

Sensor-shift image stabilization works similarly to OIS, but as the name suggests, it allows the sensor to move instead of the lens. As a result, it appears to provide more effective image stabilization than the usual method.

Finally, the DigiTimes report also mentions a high-resolution sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro model. For some time, Apple has kept the iPhone's camera to a much smaller 12MP without losing out to competitors.

However, rival phones now regularly use 48MP, 64MP, and even 108MP cameras (in the case of phones like Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra), so it makes sense for Apple to upgrade now.

The base iPhone 13 model will not feature these new sensors. Instead, it will carry over the ones used in the iPhone 12 Pro, which, while not new, is still a great camera.

Besides these camera upgrades, the other major change worth noting is the possible elimination of the Lightning port. Expect other upgrades such as a new A15 Bionic chipset, 120Hz display, and possibly the return of Touch ID on the display.
