The next Motorola Edge is almost ready to face the Galaxy S21

Motorola may have just updated its Moto G series and released the $399 Motorola One 5G Ace. But the company has bigger goals in sight, and all signs point to a new flagship device that Motorola hopes will rival the best Android phones. [Motorola introduced the Motorola Edge Plus last year. This model didn't come close to knocking Samsung's Galaxy flagship off the roost, but it looks like Motorola may try again with a new model.

A launch announcement spotted on Chinese social media platform Weibo, which appears to be from Motorola itself, states that the new phone is set to debut next week. A few other details can be gleaned from the post: the Motorola Edge S is a 5G-enabled device and will feature the Snapdragon 870G chipset. This is the system-on-chip that Qualcomm announced earlier this week and follows last year's Snapdragon 865 Plus. While not as powerful as the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform in the new Galaxy S21 lineup, the 870G should offer faster performance than last year's Android flagship phones. [We don't know if the Motorola Edge S teased in this image is for China or if it will be a global product. If this is the successor to the Motorola Edge Plus, it would be part of the phone maker's flagship family of phones that would rival the high-end features found in the premium Android market. the Edge Plus debuted at a price of $999, which is similar to Samsung s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices.

Earlier this month, PhoneArena published a leaked photo of a phone codenamed Motorola Edge Nio. That same report claims that the phone will be sold as a Moto G device elsewhere, but Moto G phones sold in the U.S. are typically powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 6 series processors.

Photos in the Motorola Edge Nio report depict a shiny phone with a pearlescent finish, a triple camera array with three sensors, each with a metal ring. Presumably, there will be a 64-megapixel main sensor with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide shooter and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

The phone itself would offer a 6.7-inch screen with two selfie punch hole cameras and a 90 Hz refresh rate. From the pictures we have seen, the bezels appear to be fairly slim, but it is hard to say for sure from the few glimpses on the Internet so far.
