Why does the Samsung Galaxy S21 not have a charger? Here is the official answer

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S21 does not come bundled with a charging brick. This move follows Apple, which did the exact same thing with the iPhone 12, and Samsung will not stop with its latest phone.

A Q&A with Patrick Chomet, EVP and head of Samsung's Customer Experience Office, on Samsung's press page confirms that other Samsung phones will be getting rid of chargers as well. However, not all will come to fruition soon.

Here is the full text of the official statement from Patrick Chomet, EVP and Head of Customer Experience Office, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung:

"We are committed to helping more Galaxy users reuse the accessories they already have and and making sustainable choices in their daily lives to promote better recycling habits. To support the Galaxy community in this journey, we are moving to removing charger plugs and earbuds from the latest line of Galaxy smartphones. By gradually removing the charger plug and earpiece from the packaging of boxed devices, we believe we can address sustainable consumption issues and remove the pressure consumers may feel to continually receive unwanted charger accessories with their new phones. We are also implementing a USB-C type charging port, which has been standardized since 2017, so that older chargers can remain compatible with the latest Galaxy models." [The 25W fast charger for the Galaxy S21 is currently $34.99 at Samsung.com, but can be had for $14.99 through Amazon.com during the sale.

In the future, removing the charger is expected to become standard practice on Samsung's flagship models, including the Galaxy Note 21 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, and will likely affect less expensive phones as well.

Samsung makes many budget and mid-range handsets, and it is worth bearing in mind that there will come a time when there will be no charger brick in the box. In other words, that bargain phone may turn out to be more expensive than you think.

Assuming, of course, that you don't already have a USB-C charging brick. The charger you received with your other phone will work with Samsung phones, but the one you have may not be able to be the fastest charging speed available for your phone.

It is not clear when Samsung will widely implement its new "no charger" policy, but it is expected to begin soon on both new premium and budget phones.
