Samsung Galaxy S21 Event: Everything to Expect when Unpacking

Samsung isn't waiting to get the Galaxy S21 and other new products into our hands. Under normal circumstances, the company would hold its first Unpacked event of the year in mid-to-late February, at which it would show off its latest flagship phone and other supporting devices it plans to release in the first few months of the year.

But in case you haven't noticed, this is not a normal time; to kick off 2021, Samsung has moved up its Galaxy Unpacked event by a month and scheduled a launch event for January 14.

So what products can we expect when Samsung executives take the virtual stage on Thursday? Here's a closer look at what to expect from this week's Galaxy Unpacked event and how you can live stream the event.

Samsung will host a Galaxy Unpacked virtual event on Thursday, January 14. The live stream will begin at 10:00 AM ET/7:00 AM PT.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to put off large press events, Samsung will hold its product launch online, as it did when it unveiled the Galaxy Note 20 family in August. The event can be viewed live streaming from Samsung's website.

Samsung.com is not the only place where Samsung will live stream Galaxy Unpacked on January 14; you can also watch the announcement on its YouTube page or follow along on the Galaxy Unpacked live blog.

It is widely expected that Samsung will unveil three Galaxy S21 models on Thursday: the 6.2-inch Galaxy S21, the 6.7-inch Galaxy S21 Plus, and the 6.8-inch Galaxy S21 Ultra. All three models will feature Qualcomm's new silicon " Snapdragon 888, and will likely offer displays with 120 Hz refresh rates.

However, only the Ultra is expected to feature dynamic refresh rate adjustment, similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

The S21 Ultra could also stand out in other ways, such as support for the S Pen stylus, which was previously limited to the Galaxy Note lineup. Samsung's largest S21 model could also offer two telephoto lenses (3x and 10x) and a 108MP main shooter. Rumors suggest that the S21 and S21 Plus will have a similar triple-camera setup.

Some rumors suggest that the Galaxy S21 will be cheaper than the Galaxy S20's debut price of $999, and the S21 Plus will also be reduced in price. However, the S21 Ultra could cost slightly more than last year's model. The Galaxy S21 lineup is expected to ship by the end of the month, with some pointing to next week as the release date.

Other than the Galaxy S21, the Samsung product we know the most about, despite not being announced, is the Galaxy Buds Pro. The wireless earbuds are expected to adopt more sophisticated features to compete with Apple's AirPods Pro.

Specifically, Samsung's next wireless earbuds will likely offer active noise cancellation, smart voice detection that enables ambient listening when you start talking, and 3D audio mode. The latter features will compete with the AirPods Pro's spatial audio, but Samsung's Pro earphones are said to be less expensive.

Rumors were rife that Samsung was working on its own key finder product, but with Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag certification popping up online, followed by leaked images of the tracker, the list of potential Galaxy Unpacked announcements skyrocketed

Samsung's version would apparently use Bluetooth, like the best keyfinders we've tested. Releasing SmartTags now would also give Samsung a head start on Apple's more advanced AirTags product, which will apparently be released in the spring. Apple's devices would use ultra-wideband, which is even more accurate than Bluetooth.

Samsung Electronics President TM Roh promised last month that Samsung would continue to offer folding phones. Roh said, "We will be expanding our portfolio of foldables to make this groundbreaking category more accessible to everyone."

Most people interpret this to mean that Samsung will bring out more affordable foldable phones, but it is unclear if any of them will be available in time for this week's Unpacked event. It is more likely that we will see updates to Samsung's existing foldable phones.

We have the most details on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is rumored to be a possible replacement for the Galaxy Note lineup. However, rumors suggest that the phone won't appear until later this year. What remains is the next version of the Galaxy Z Flip, which will reportedly be quickly transformed into the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The original Flip debuted at the same time as the Galaxy S20, so it would not be out of place to introduce a new model.
