Samsung Galaxy S21 teaser just revealed the biggest camera upgrade

We're just a few days away from Samsung's Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S21 series is expected to be unveiled, but that hasn't stopped the teasers about the flagship phone's camera.

A video posted on Samsung's YouTube channel reveals the design of the much leaked new rear camera module, which basically appears to curve around the upper left edge of the phone, hinting at some of the camera's features.

The video is only 27 seconds long, so this is very much a teaser rather than a detailed look, but it does serve to further confirm many of the recent rumors around the Galaxy S21.

The burst clip at the beginning shows off the Galaxy S21's curved camera module, which appears to have three lenses. The video does not mention any specs. However, based on previous leaks, the three cameras are expected to consist of a 12MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera.

This is essentially the same camera setup as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Plus. However, Samsung is expected to tweak the software aspects and image processing to increase the capabilities of the rear camera.

And that is what this teaser suggests. For example, at the 8- to 10-second mark, there appears to be an evolved version of what appears to be Samsung's Single Take mode, which records a short video of a subject or scene and the Galaxy phone snaps and collates a series of photos from it.

The Galaxy S20 series was able to pull 32MP photos from an 8K capture; we don't expect the Galaxy S21 to be any better, but perhaps a more sophisticated take on this feature. 5 seconds in, camera and phone chipset performance renderings are shown that suggest an improvement.

In the clip at about 11 seconds, the Galaxy S21 is recording a band, and the phone is able to jump smoothly between video captures with all three lenses. This is likely facilitated by the Snapdragon 888 chipset, which promises improved CPU GPU and image processing performance.

And there is some sort of recording-while-recording that suggests the Galaxy S21 can capture video from both the front and rear camera arrays simultaneously. iPhone 12 can do this, but requires a third-party app.

Moving forward to the 15-second mark, there is a clip of people eagerly jumping off the back of a truck, suggesting that the Galaxy S21 can capture bursts of clear still images from fast-moving situations. Again, this could be an advanced version of a single take.

Toward the end of the video, a person is shown standing in the dark, but the Galaxy S21 takes a picture as if he were standing in a brightly lit building. This is a fairly obvious suggestion that the Galaxy S21's night mode has been improved. However, it is much easier to achieve such results in a choreographed situation than it is to snap a night mode photo in a busy bar. So we will have to wait and see how well this announced photo shoot works in real life.

Interestingly, there did not seem to be any hint of the Galaxy S21 Ultra in the video. Given the large amount of rumors and leaks around this phone, we expect Samsung to reveal it along with the rest of the Galaxy S21 series on January 14.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is expected to feature a quad rear camera array, with a 108MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP telephoto camera (one with 10x optical zoom and the other with 3x zoom).

However, no such images were seen in the official teaser video. We speculate that Samsung is holding off on teasers about the Galaxy S21 Ultra to give more excitement to what is supposed to be its next top-end flagship device.

Of course, the full complement of leaked information means that the aforementioned four cameras, Snapdragon 888, and LTPO display with dynamically adjustable refresh rate of 120Hz will provide the best refresh rate for the content being displayed and maintain high refresh This means that battery life can be maintained when high refresh rates are not required.

S Pen support is almost confirmed for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, we expect Samsung to show it off in another trailer. Especially since we expect it to come with a pretty neat optional carrying case for the evolved S Pen.

Within two days of Samsung revealing the Galaxy S21 series, it will be clear what rumors, leaks, and predictions will come to fruition. If you want to watch the event, check out Samsung's Galaxy S21 event live stream guide. Also, stay tuned to Tom's Guide for the latest Galaxy S21 news.
