Amazon's grocery delivery service, Prime Pantry, has been shut down permanently; the service, launched in 2014, ended this past Wednesday, Bloomberg reports. A short message on the pantry's old website reads, "Amazon Pantry has ended. [Amazon Prime Pantry began as a benefit for Prime members. The service offered delivery of fresh produce, snacks, and cleaning supplies. The service was designed for shoppers who liked to stock up on consumable items and initially required that items be placed in a virtual Prime Pantry cart before the order could be shipped.

In 2008, Amazon revamped its Prime Pantry service, making it a $5/month subscription service in addition to the Prime membership fee. With this change, Prime Pantry orders were unlimited each month as long as shoppers met the $40 minimum; orders under $40 required a $7.99 fee.

The elimination of Prime Pantry does not mean that Amazon is getting out of grocery delivery. Rather, Amazon is doubling down on its grocery efforts, especially in light of Pandemic and its new competitor, Wal-Mart Plus. Amazon customers also have access to Amazon Fresh, which delivers fresh produce, and Prime Now's Whole Foods delivery service.
