iPhone13killer display upgrade just leaked, there is a big surprise

The iPhone 13 Pro display is rumored to undergo major changes, with some minor improvements to the entire iPhone 13 lineup and further improvements to next year's iPhone 14.

The Elec. reports that the top two iPhone 13 models will feature advanced 120Hz LTPO displays from Samsung Display. 120Hz and LTPO have long been rumored for the iPhone 13, but the rest of the iPhone 13 series, and iPhone 14 details are new.

LTPO (short for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) is a type of transistor that is part of a smartphone display. The advantage of this type is that it allows the phone to automatically vary its refresh rate, which Samsung Display calls "Adaptive Frequency."

While a higher refresh rate allows for smoother scrolling during web browsing and a smoother experience in compatible movies and games, it is a power-hungry feature that significantly reduces battery life. Allowing the phone to adjust the refresh rate on the fly, such as increasing the refresh rate during gaming and decreasing it on the home screen, can reduce battery consumption.

All four iPhone 13 models are expected to feature OLED displays, as are the four models that make up the iPhone 12 series. The difference is that the iPhone 13 series will feature an "on-cell" OLED panel, which is thinner and cheaper for Apple because it has built-in touchscreen functionality rather than being added via another layer within the display.

Elec states that all models will not adopt the LTPO display until after 2022. That will probably be the year the iPhone 14 will be introduced. Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra already uses this technology, and there are rumors that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will also use this technology. Therefore, the information that Samsung Display will provide Apple with LTPO panels is not a big surprise.

If you are interested in the more specifics of The Elec's report, it states that Samsung Display will be the sole supplier of the new display. LG Display, another company that Apple could have contracted to manufacture LTPO panels, will not be able to start supplying parts until 2022. This is because Samsung alone may not have the capacity to supply parts for all four versions.

The iPhone 13 is scheduled to appear at the end of September this year. However, with this display upgrade, plus the LiDAR sensor on all models and the hinted return of the fingerprint sensor, it could very well be one of the best phones of 2021.
