iPhone13 leak just revealed killer camera upgrade for all 4 models

One of the key features of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is the inclusion of LiDAR, but the iPhone 13 takes it a step further. Later this year, Apple is expected to add a LiDAR camera sensor to all 2021 iPhones.

The news comes from DigiTimes, whose sources revealed that Apple has plans to add LiDAR to both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. In other words, the entire series of next-generation iPhones will benefit from LiDAR-centric cameras.

LiDAR first appeared on the iPad Pro 2020 before it was incorporated into the iPhone 12 Pro series last year. liDAR works by firing a laser at the environment and measuring the time it takes for it to be reflected back by an object in the room (up to 5 meters away). The camera of the iPhone 12 Pro is then used to measure the time it takes for the laser to be reflected back. This allows the iPhone 12 Pro's camera to more accurately measure distances because it effectively scans an area, giving the camera many advantages.

Most noticeable is the improved accuracy in augmented reality-centric apps and faster AR setups, as the device can quickly and accurately determine the location of everything. It is also used to improve focus accuracy and speed, especially in low light.

Other benefits, though not yet realized, include the possibility of Apple using LiDAR to add 3D data to photos and to work with the long-rumored AR Apple Glasses.

DigiTimes has not provided much other information on LiDAR for the iPhone 13. However, the magazine mentions that the iPhone 13 will still feature FaceID, and while it seems unlikely that the display notch will disappear, rumors already suggest that it will be smaller.

Naturally, LiDAR is not the only upgrade coming to iPhone 13. We have heard reports that Apple will finally debut a 120Hz LTPO display and camera upgrades like a "folding lens" that uses a periscope-like design to improve optical zoom capabilities. There is also a possibility that Apple will add an in-screen fingerprint scanner and offer the legendary portless iPhone to be completely wireless.

The A15 Bionic chipset is almost certain to debut, hopefully displacing the A14 Bionic. There will no doubt be more to come as Apple's fall launch date approaches.
