Samsung Galaxy S21 has a steep hill to climb as iPhone dominates Christmas

With the Galaxy S21 rumored to launch on January 14, the pressure is on for Samsung, with nine of the top 10 smartphone activations concentrated on the iPhone on Christmas Day, according to a new report from Flurry Analytics, It was an incredibly strong holiday shopping season for Apple.

According to Flurry Analytics, Christmas Day is the busiest day for smartphone activations. In the top 10, the iPhone 8 through 12 Pro Max dominated the charts. Not a single Samsung phone made the top 10.

Interestingly, at #10 was the cheap LG K30 from 2018. iPhones dominated the Christmas Day charts again in 2019, accounting for 9 of the top 10. 2019's #10 was also an interesting entry with the Xiaomi Mi 4 LTE.

Compared to activations seven days before Christmas, the iPhone SE, 12, and 12 Pro Max were the models that showed a notable increase.

Still, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and recession have left families strapped; compared to 2019, smartphone activations were down 23% this year.

Regardless of the pandemic and economic woes, demand for Apple products appears to remain high; even top-of-the-line products like the $550 Airpods Max are completely sold out. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which starts at $1,100, has outsold every other iPhone released in the past three years.

Samsung's Galaxy S21 is trying to break Apple's dominance with three new models. Leaked information points to a lower price, a new faster Snapdragon 888 chip, and longer battery life; it is expected to support the S Pen stylus (as an accessory) and offer dual telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x optical zoom.
