What to see on Christmas Day: Wonder Woman 1984, Soul and More

I'm looking for something to watch on Christmas Day this shitty season, December 25th is traditionally the day of the big theatrical releases, but as you know [big gesture of all things]...... That's not the plan this year.

This year, the best streaming services are providing hours of entertainment at home, and Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBO Max are giving viewers a chance to open all the presents from Santa before the Christmas feast The gifts are being dropped off.

Here are five things to stream on Christmas Day.

HBO Max has a big gift for everyone (Roku and Fire TV users have earned it with patience): Wonder Woman 1984 is being delivered on Christmas. We've been excited ever since the trailer revealed that Kristen Wiig (as Cheetah) and Pedro Pascal (as Maxwell Lord) would be Wonder Woman's latest enemies. But Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) has a lot more to take care of now that Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) has somehow returned. Look out for this chilling casting, because you can't get a major blockbuster without paying an extra $30 (who knows how well Disney Plus and "Mulan" did). - Henry T. Casey

Just when it seemed that Pixar was going to be just another sequel or spin-off factory (we are as excited about Chris Evans as everyone else is about Buzz Lightyear, but well ), the studio found a new way to surprise us. The film begins with the introduction of Joe (Jamie Foxx), a band teacher who loves jazz but never made it big. However, after a near-death experience, life suddenly changes for Joe. Without wanting to spoil anything, "Soul" seems to be the spiritual successor to "Inside Out." It also stars David Diggs and Tina Fey. It is free to Disney Plus members. - Henry T. Casey

Shonda Rhimes' first project for Netflix, Jane Austen meets Gossip Girl. The "Grey's Anatomy" super-producer is teaming up with Chris Van Dusen to adapt Julia Quinn's Bridgeton romance novel. The story follows the eponymous family whose eldest daughter, Daphne, joins the London season as a matchmaker. She catches the eye of the smoldering and racy Duke of Hastings, but things get complicated when their names appear in the mysterious Lady Whistledown's infamous gossip pamphlet. Bridgerton's fantastically entertaining film is filled with sexual tension. XOXO for this holiday treat.- Kellie Wu

In the days leading up to Christmas, you're focused on last-minute gift shopping and finishing up work, and Netflix has already put a present under the tree! You probably didn't notice that Netflix had already left it under the tree. The Midnight Sky, starring and directed by George Clooney, looks like the contemplative sci-fi film we've all been waiting for, while humanity lives a life-changing drama. Clooney plays scientist Augustine, who is charged with the simple but ominous and sad mission of warning a crew of astronauts that they should not return to Earth. - Henry T. Casey

However strange it may be to talk about this year's Oscar nominees, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" certainly belongs on that topic. The film is an adaptation of August Wilson's play, with a stellar cast led by Viola Davis. Released last week, the period piece is set in 1927 Chicago, where musicians gather for a studio recording session with pioneering blues singer Ma Rainey. As the days pass, tensions build and boil over, culminating in an explosive conclusion. The film is powerfully portrayed by Davis as Ma and Chadwick Boseman as trumpeter Reeve in a breathtaking performance. This was the deceased's last screen performance and a potential posthumous Oscar winner. And in this, his worst year, it is a gift. - Kelley Wu
