Check Disk (or chkdsk) performs a scan of the file system to find and fix problems. chkdsk resides in the command line interface and the actual app is not, so you may not know how to run it, but as you can guess, it is quite important as a utility. especially if things are going wrong.

The good news? This bug is rare and has apparently been reported before. This is not particularly difficult to avoid. Hopefully, you won't need to run Check Disk while Microsoft quietly fixes this bug in the background. If you do need to use Check Disk and your system crashes, a reboot should get you back on track.

Hopefully in the near future we will be able to run Check Disk using "chkdsk [drive letter]: /f". Since this utility is an important feature for power users, it is not hard to imagine that Microsoft would want to fix it as soon as possible.
