The office is coming to Peacock, but not all episodes are free

New year, new streaming service! Starting January 1, "The Office" will move from Netflix to Peacock.

Peacock announced its plans to stream The Office in a fake Dunder Mifflin memo, advertising that the service would include "all previously released episodes and brand new, never-before-seen content." However, only some episodes will be available on Peacock Free, and most will require a Peacock Premium subscription.

The Office was a fan favorite that aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013, and the workplace comedy has been a perennial streaming hit for Netflix. According to Forbes' calculations, The Office has been ranked 177 times (or 61%) in the 10 months since Netflix's Top 10 list debuted.

But when NBCUniversal began preparing to launch its own streaming service, the company viewed "The Office" as its own crown jewel, much as HBO Max did when it launched "Friends." Peacock paid $100 million to its sister production studio, Universal Television, for the streaming rights to "The Office".

Now that investment has finally paid off, and "The Office" will debut at Peacock on January 1.

However, Peacock's plans for streaming "The Office" come with a major caveat.

Only the first two seasons of "The Office" will be available on Peacock Free's free ad-supported streaming service.

Seasons 3-9 and special "superfan episodes" will require a subscription to Peacock Premium ($4.99/month) or Peacock Premium Plus ($9.99/month), which is also ad-supported.

These "Super Fun Episodes" feature never-before-seen footage and deleted scenes from the extended cut of the original series beginning with Season 3 (more will be added in March). Peacock has released sample clips of the Super Fun Episodes:

Peacock will also have a collection of themed episodes, blooper-like behind-the-scenes content, and a clip playlist. It will also offer a channel called "The Office Zen," a 24/7 office-like noise channel for people who work from home. Peacock has also partnered with Giphy and TikTok to launch a dedicated Office channel.
