Google Pixel5Pro Leak Teases Killer Camera Upgrade

The Google Pixel 5 may not have been the mobile powerhouse people had hoped for, but disappointed fans will be pleased to hear about this latest leak that leaks information on the rumored Pixel 5 Pro.

The device has been teased for weeks, promising a premium flagship experience that the Pixel 5 lacked. Now, screenshots from Slashleaks show what could be a significant upgrade.

The first and most obvious thing about these leaked screenshots is that the alleged Pixel 5 Pro has no front-facing camera. This makes one wonder if Google has introduced a pop-up camera lens or if it is actually under the screen.

Under-display cameras are not yet available on mainstream phones, and in fact, we know of only one commercially available phone that has one: the ZTE Axon 20 5G. It is therefore the least likely of the two options.

Nevertheless, since the advent of the hole-punch camera, pop-up cameras have largely disappeared. While not impossible, it would be odd for Google to adopt that seemingly dead technology. Especially since the Pixel 5 had a perfectly good hole-punch camera.

Other information gleaned from the AIDA64 screenshot includes a reference to the "kona" platform; Kona was the codename for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865, the flagship chipset for 2019. It is a bit odd that Google would not opt for the newer Snapdragon 888. However, newer chipsets cost more, and by choosing a slightly older model, Google may be able to keep costs down. Still, it is a significant power increase from the Snapdragon 765 used in the current Pixel 5.

In addition to the new chip, we also see 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, double the capacity of the Pixel 5.

Not much else can be said for certain from these images, which means there are still many unanswered questions about the Pixel 5 Pro. Assuming these images are legitimate, though, they may not be. Specs on battery, screen size, camera capabilities, etc. are still unknown.

The least we can expect is something better than the Pixel 5, as the Pixel 5 has a 6-inch display, a 4,080 mAh battery, and two rear cameras (a 12.2MP wide-angle lens and a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens), while the Pro has a more larger display and a larger battery may be expected.

As ever, we will report on the Google Pixel 5 Pro as information becomes available. But it could be an amazing Android phone that could steal the thunder of Samsung's Galaxy S21 next year.
