When the Apple TV 2021 launches this year, it will benefit from a new tvOS 14 update announced at WWDC 2020. This tvOS update adds multi-user support for Apple Arcade games, improved integration with Apple HomeKit-enabled accessories, and improved picture-in-picture mode (including AirPlay video).

In addition, Apple TV Plus has released an exciting trailer for the sci-fi series Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov's seminal book series. tvOS 14 update may not be the only update for Apple TV 2021. Rumors are flying about an Apple TV 4K with Apple's fast A12X Bionic chip (probably not the final name).

One Apple insider said the Apple TV 2020 is "ready to ship"; it would be the first new Apple TV hardware since 2017's Apple TV 4K, which remains one of the best streaming devices on the market.

Here's everything else we know about the Apple TV 2021.

The last Apple TV was released in September 2017, but that doesn't mean Apple will stick to that timetable: in mid-March, the company announced the iPad Pro 2020 and MacBook Air 2020 in an 8 a.m. Eastern time press release. And in April and May, the iPhone SE 2020 and MacBook Pro 2020 (13-inch) were hastily announced.

The company could do the same with the Apple TV 2020, given that Apple leaker Jon Prosser has said it is "ready to ship."

The current Apple TV 4K starts at $179, which is more expensive than many competing streaming devices. For example, the Roku Ultra, which supports 4K HDR content and comes with a voice remote control, costs $99. And the Amazon Fire TV Cube with built-in Alexa and cable box control is $119. Hopefully Apple will drop the price of the Apple TV 2020.

The Apple TV 2020 may be more about video games than streaming in terms of what will change. The first Apple TV 2020 rumors we saw pointed to an overdue speed-up update that would allow for a new processor. Signs suggest it could be either Apple's A12 or A13 Bionic chip. To put that in perspective, the latest Apple TVs use A10 Fusion chip technology, which has been around since its debut in 2016 with the iPhone 7.

This upgrade is probably because the Apple TV is one of the Apple Arcade platforms, as the current processor is fast enough to binge watch Apple TV Plus shows, Netfix marathons, and other live TV apps, It is likely intended to bring even more gaming performance to this box.

The latest rumor, which 9to5Mac pulled from a prominent YouTuber, is that the Apple TV 2020 will be available in 64GB and 128GB capacities, double the 32GB and 64GB drives of the Apple TV 4K. This is also likely to be gaming-oriented, allowing users to store a larger library of titles on the Apple TV and play more complex games.

As announced at WWDC, the tvOS 14 update adds or extends several features to the platform that drives the Apple TV. These include:

A new control center for HomeKit accessories: similar to those available in iOS and iPad OS.

Multi-user support for AppleArcade: Switch between users to resume game progress or view another user's game progress, achievements, and friends.

Support for more game controllers: including Xbox Elite 2 and Xbox adaptive controller.

Picture-in-picture mode. Watch the news while using a fitness app; see who's ringing your HomeKit-enabled doorbell. Plus, check out 4K video from your phone or iPad via AirPlay.

There were also a few rumored features that were not announced in tvOS14: 9to5Mac reported on a new Kids Mode that allows parents to create profiles/accounts for their children that can be managed using parental controls. Since the new tvOS has already added multi-user support for games, this seems likely to roll out soon.

We also expected the activity tracking Screen Time feature to come in the next tvOS, but it was not included in tvOS 14.

We want to see a new Apple TV remote control that doesn't rely on the touchpad for navigation. And leaked iOS 14 code suggests that a new Apple TV remote control is on the way. However, it is not known if the new remote for the Apple TV 2020 will change the input method.
