iPhone13 leak just teased radical new design

Rumors frequently pop up that cell phones are going portless and will be completely wireless from charging to data connection. This is especially true for Apple.

It seems like every time a new iPhone rumor comes out, the topic of a portless iPhone comes up again. iPhone 13 is no exception, but this time we are hearing that not all models will be completely portless.

As everyone knows, the days of Apple releasing one phone at a time are long gone. iPhone 12 has four models, and there will almost certainly be a handful of iPhone 13 devices coming next year. And now John Prosser claims that one of them will be a completely portless, holeless phone.

Admittedly Prosser has a bit of a mixed track record, though this is not the first time he has claimed that at least one iPhone 13 would be portless. Apparently this is still Apple's plan.

Of course, Prosser is not the only one saying this is happening; Ming-Chi Kuo, the de facto king of Apple analysts, said almost the same thing last December, and other sources are talking about a portless iPhone whenever possible.

But what would a portless iPhone look like? No ports means no charging ports of any kind. An iPhone without ports might not even have a SIM card slot or speaker holes. Obviously there is no headphone jack either, but Apple is unlikely to bring it back.

Such phones exist in concept form, but so far no one has actually released a portless phone that consumers can purchase; the 2019 Vivo Apex is one such device, with the phone's speaker and microphone placed below the screen, the phone itself relied on wireless and eSIM.

These are not particularly big questions these days, especially with the launch of MagSafe and the fact that Google Pixel 5 didn't think the search giant would be worth announcing after seeing the Pixel 5 casually place a speaker under its display.

The only problem we can see with the lack of wired data connectivity lies in the repair process. There are plenty of ways to transfer files and data wirelessly or via the cloud, so this would not be an issue for everyday use. However, given Apple's increasing reliance on external software to repair iPhones, some physical connection somewhere on the phone may be necessary. Nevertheless, nothing prevents them from keeping it hidden so that it can only be accessed when the iPhone is being repaired.

In that light, the idea of a portless iPhone is not so far-fetched. That is, however, if Apple can make it happen without raising the price too much, but if they can speed up MagSafe charging in the process, I have no complaints.

The only real question is which iPhone will be portless. iPhone 13 Pro Max would be the obvious choice, as it already has the best and most expensive iPhone hardware, but a fifth model is not out of the question not.
