Rumors were already circulating that the next iPad Pro would feature Mini-LED technology, but it appears that two types of screens will be available next year.

Korean website The Elec claims that both Mini-LED and OLED iPad Pros will drop in 2021. Apple is taking a phased approach, with Mini-LEDs on the revised version in early 2021 and OLEDs on the later models.

The exact basis for this decision is unclear, but according to reporter Jong Jun Lee, Samsung is currently renovating its A4 plant in Asan, South Korea, to produce OLED screens for the iPad.

Mini LED is a new technology that aims to deliver the same clarity and chromatic pop as OLED at less cost. Being a new technology, prices are not yet significantly cheaper, but over time, Mini-LEDs (and a different technology, Micro-LEDs) are expected to bring pristine clarity at a more affordable price. However, unlike the current iPad, which uses an edge-lit display, Mini-LED is a full backlight array, making the panel inherently thicker.

If current rumors are to be believed, the Mini-LED display will only be available on the high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which will be released in early 2021. In other words, those who opt for the iPad Mini will get a standard LCD.

Both Mini-LED and OLED offer many advantages over standard LCD, especially in color saturation and contrast. Both technologies are capable of accurate local dimming, resulting in jet blacks. Apple currently uses OLED displays in its iPhones and Apple Watch.

The current iPad Pro, redesigned for 2018, is a consistently well-reviewed product. In our iPad Pro review, we praised the current model's blazing fast performance and improved keyboard. On the hardware side, Apple seems to have created a near-perfect product, but it is not yet a MacBook Air successor.
