Mobile phone manufacturers have been touting the potential of foldable phones for the past few years, but so far few have launched products that actually work. Oppo, however, has come up with a new idea. Instead of launching a foldable phone with one hinge in the middle, the company announced the Oppo X 2021.

Oppo unveiled a smartphone with a "continuously variable OLED display." It can also adapt the content on the screen in the process, allowing everything on the screen to be enlarged or reduced to use as much screen space as possible. [This is not the first time we've seen something like this, and TCL and LG have been hyping their own rollable efforts for a while now, but it's still fascinating to see it in action.

As you can see in the IceUniverse video, expanding the display is as simple as sliding your finger over a button on the side of the phone. As the screen expands, the content expands with it.

The screen itself is expandable from a minimum size of 6.7 inches to a maximum of 7.4 inches, but the "variable" part of that display means that anything in between can be done; Oppo also ensures that the screen is always kept at a crease-free angle so that, for example Galaxy Z Fold 2, the company claims that the screen will never have vertical spots, as is the case with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. After all, a simple scrolling feature is all well and good until it gets winded. So Oppo developed what he called a "warp track," a system that uses a "roll motor" to support the display with an expanding plate.

Besides, the back also expands, so you don't expose the inside of the phone to the elements every time you want a bigger screen.

The downside here, as with many other devices like this one, is that this is not a commercial product. The fact that there is a working device tells us that there is hope that it may one day appear, but this is a concept that will not be launched anytime soon. The only questions are what the price is likely to be and whether it will be released outside of Oppo's home base of China.
