Update: The Xbox Series X smoke theory has been largely debunked since it was first discussed. The original article has been updated below.

According to multiple reports circulating on the internet, it appears that multiple Xbox Series X units are overheating, resulting in smoke coming out of the vents, including this viral post on Reddit and this one on Twitter.

However, as with most ridiculous things on the Internet, these videos were quickly proven to be self-made by several sources.

Several Twitter users reported that making an Xbox Series X look like it is smoking is very easy with a vaporizer.

Xbox itself concurred, in perhaps the biggest video game tweet of the year:

However, at least one Reddit user commented that they too have a legitimate smoking problem, noting that "the smoke smells so funny," and that Microsoft's support, stating that they had sent a message to support.

The Reddit thread also reported countless other launch issues with the Xbox Series X, including Microsoft's console shutting down at random times, not being able to insert discs, and controllers suddenly disconnecting.

It is still unclear how common these problems are, but if you are experiencing any of these issues, we recommend contacting Microsoft support.
