PS5 Update - Sony is sharing important new information before launch

The PS5 will be available this weekend, but there are a few things new PS5 buyers should know before turning it on.

Like the PlayStation 4, the PS5 gets hot. According to reviews, outside temperatures can reach 47 degrees Celsius and 116 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to a PlayStation blog post, ventilation is key. Here is the company's official guidance on setting up the PS5:

The blog post includes other information. Most notably, the PS5 DualSense controller will be available in other colors sometime after launch. Unfortunately, there are no plans to release new PS5 colors. However, YouTuber Dave2D is able to customize his review unit, noting that the removable side panel adheres well to paint.

Every PS5 comes with a DualSense controller, USB Type-C cable, HDMI cable, power cord, and a base attachment for vertical or horizontal placement. All PS5s come with the game Astro's Playroom installed.

Some games also allow users to select parts to download. If there is a popular shooter that everyone is playing, users can install only the multiplayer part and forgo the single player, which is a really useful feature considering that the PS5 only has 667 GB of storage space. Also, because Sony's new console requires the use of a super-fast SSD, PS5 games cannot be loaded onto external media such as USB memory sticks or external hard disk drives. PS4 games, however, can be loaded to external media.

Fortunately, there will be an option to expand the PS5's internal storage in the future.

Users with surround sound systems will benefit greatly from the PS5's 3D audio processing. Sony is focusing its research and development efforts on expanding the audio capabilities of the PS5 to make gaming more immersive. According to Sony, "Thanks to the PS5's Tempest 3D AudioTech, even simple channel-based audio can have an even more three-dimensional feel."

Sony states that the new PULSE 3D wireless headset can take full advantage of PS5's 3D audio. For those who do not have a surround sound setup, virtual surround sound on the TV speakers will not be available at launch, but will be available in a future update.

Supported audio formats:

As for the controller's audio, Sony claims that DualSense will have a built-in speaker with a higher sampling frequency and "acoustic improvements."

The PS4's DualShock 4 has it. It should be a step up from the tiny sounding speakers.

The PS5's DualSense controller will have a noise-canceling microphone that will allow for voice input. This will forgo the use of an on-screen keyboard.

The DualSense also optimizes input latency compared to the DualShock 4. This is good news for shooters and fighting game fans.

The PS5 will be available on November 12 in the US and November 19 in the UK. For the latest information on availability, be sure to bookmark our PS5 Where to Buy guide.
