Payment method: How to request payment by the due date

Some Americans are still owed checks from the first round of stimulus checks issued in the spring, and the deadline to claim those funds, November 21, is fast approaching.

While there appears to be no immediate progress on the second round of stimulus checks, the IRS is sending $1,200 checks and $500 dependent care grants to those who have not yet received their first round of benefits.

Nearly 9 million people, many of whom have not filed taxes, have not received the $1,200 stimulus checks provided by the CARES Act passed in March.

These non-filers are likely to be older Americans living on their savings or heads of low-income households. Also, those living on federal benefits such as Social Security, Railroad Retirement, and Department of Veterans Affairs may be eligible.

The IRS began notifying eligible individuals in September and subsequently extended the deadline to request payment from October 15 to November 21.

Similarly, some parents did not receive the additional $500 benefit for their dependent children - again, mostly because these people did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. The deadline to claim these benefits is also November 21.

The IRS will send notices to those who are eligible, but if you believe you have missed a payment, you can use the Non-Filers tool on IRS.gov to check your eligibility.

If you are eligible for non-payment, complete the request by November 21. If you do not enter your bank account information to receive direct deposit, a paper check will be mailed to you instead.
