PS5DualSense vs. DualShock4: What is different?

PS5 is finally here, and the PlayStation® controller is getting its most innovative design yet. The new DualSense controller is designed to provide the most immersive experience ever, with advanced haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and built-in sound, allowing you to feel and hear your favorite games like never before.

However, the DualShock 4 on the PS4™ is considered one of the best controllers ever, and some games will continue to use it on the PS5™. If you're wondering what's new about the DualSense vs. DualShock 4 and how you can use these two controllers on Sony's new console, read on.

Next-generation features don't come cheap. The DualSense Wireless Controller retails for $69.99, a bit more than the DualShock 4's MSRP of $64.99. However, we often see the latter controller on sale, so keep an eye out for PS5 deals on Black Friday.

Of course, both of these controllers come with their respective consoles, so PS5 owners can get one dual-sense right out of the box.

It's not just the PS5 itself that gets bigger with Sony's new hardware; the DualSense is considerably sturdier than the DualShock 4, with a hefty grip reminiscent of an Xbox wireless controller. At 9.9 ounces versus 7.4 ounces, the DualSense doesn't feel much heavier than the DualShock 4, but you'll notice the size difference right away.

After using the DualSense for a few days, I'm still not sure which controller I prefer in terms of feel; the PS5 gamepad has a satisfying weight, but I'm concerned about whether my hands will cramp up after hours of immersion in an intense session of "Mortal Kombat" or "Call of Duty."

[12 I am concerned about whether or not my hands will cramp up after hours of immersion in intense sessions of "Mortal Kombat" or "Call of Duty. The DualShock 4 feels ergonomic and very compact when compared to its newer siblings.

However, not only do these controllers feel different, they also look very different. While most DualShock 4s are monochromatic, the DualSense has an eye-popping two-tone design with white translucent buttons and a black interior.

The button layout is almost identical, but the DualSense has a much larger touchpad area. In addition, the DualSense's rear grip consists of small symbols corresponding to the PlayStation's four face buttons (circle, cross, square, and triangle).

The light bar on the DualSense is illuminated from the front touchpad and is much more visible than the top light on the DualShock 4. It is also worth noting that the DualSense has moved to USB-C for charging, whereas the DualShock 4 relies on the older standard, micro USB.

A major selling point of the DualSense is its advanced haptics and adaptive triggers, which work together to provide more immersive feedback than any other controller. For example, when playing "Astro's Playroom," you can feel the fine sound of sand as you walk through a desert storm, or feel the extra resistance when you squeeze the trigger to make a spring-loaded character fly. DualSense needs to be tested in more games, but from what I've played so far, the Sony controller can provide the most advanced feedback I've ever felt on a gamepad, even compared to the Switch's 3D Rumble.

The DualSense and DualShock 4 share many features, including built-in speakers, motion control support, and a touchpad for swiping through games and menus. the DualSense goes a step further and has a built-in microphone, allowing you to use it in-game chat with friends or even perform certain in-game actions, such as blowing the microphone to advance the platform in Astro's Playroom.

Naturally, the PS5 DualSense controller is designed specifically for the PS5, but early reports indicate that it can also be used on PC and Android (we will verify this claim shortly.) You cannot use the DualSense on the PS4; it is only available on the PS3.

The DualShock 4 is also compatible with PS4, PS3, PC, Mac, Android, and iOS, making it versatile by comparison; it also works with PS5, but only when playing backward compatible PS4 games. Therefore, when purchasing additional controllers, one should keep in mind what type of local multiplayer games will be played on the PS5.

Early tests indicate that the DualSense is a significant upgrade from the DualShock 4 thanks to its immersive tactile feedback and adaptive triggers, creating a gaming experience that feels truly next-generation. Gamers with smaller hands may have trouble getting used to the new controller, but the hefty design is a nice touch.

If you're not a PlayStation gamer and are wondering which gamepad will offer a better experience on PC or mobile, stay tuned for more extensive testing. However, those who pre-order the PS5 should be able to fully enjoy the exciting new controller features on the DualSense.
