Jon Stewart will host his own show on Apple TV Plus, five years after leaving his position as anchor of The Daily Show.

According to a press release, Jon Stewart's Apple TV Plus show will focus on current events and explore "topics that are currently part of the national conversation and his advocacy work. It is similar to John Oliver's Last Week Tonight. A podcast will also be available.

Stewart hosted "The Daily Show" for nearly 20 years, during which time the "Comedy Central" series won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Series for 10 consecutive years; he stepped down in 2015 and was replaced by Trevor Noah.

Since Stewart's departure, he has kept a low profile except for his advocacy work on behalf of 9/11 first responders. This year he released his directorial project, the film Irresistible.

For Apple TV Plus, signing Stewart to a comprehensive deal (including new programming) is a major win. The streaming service may be thrust into the spotlight in a way it hasn't since the service launched last year.

Apple did not announce a release date for Stewart's new show, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, it is expected to air first next year.

Late January 2021 would be just around the time of the inauguration of the winner of the 2020 presidential election, which seems like a perfect time to launch the show.

Apple has ordered multiple seasons of this current affairs show, but the exact number is unknown, as is the number of episodes per season.

What is known: Each episode will be one hour long and focus on a single topic.

It will be interesting to see how Stewart's show will be formatted: will it be anchored by Stewart, like Last Week Tonight, and will he give his opinion on the topic? Or will he invite guests to interview him? Or will it be a mix of both?
