Chrome OS is in dark mode — you can try it now

While there is much to love about Chromebooks, there is also much that is lacking compared to Mac and Windows machines. For example, Chromebooks do not yet have a dedicated dark mode, much to the ire of users.

Thankfully, a dedicated dark mode may be coming to Chrome OS in the near future.

Android Police discovered changes to Chrome OS' Canary Channel, revealing that Google is at least working on a system-wide dark mode for Chrome OS. It is unclear when a stable version of such a feature will be rolled out to the public, but the fact that Google seems to be working on it is a good thing. Especially if you plan to work late or have a reason to stay focused on the screen for an extended period of time.

If you don't want to wait, you can install the Canary channel on your Chromebook first. Then copy and paste chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark and chrome://flags/#enable-webui-dark-mode into your URL bar and turn on both flags in the drop-down menu.

Voila! You now have Chrome OS dark mode enabled. Albeit a very early and probably very buggy iteration.

While the overall application of the new dark mode is not perfect, it appears that dark mode has been applied to all UIs in Chrome OS; it is reported to work quite well in both the Chrome browser and other system web apps, which is always a good sign.

A more extensive and stable rollout date has not yet been set. But the evidence right now is clear: Google is about to introduce a dark mode to Chrome OS, which will make it a little easier to put up with.
