Forget Alexa: Google Assistant got this killer feature

Google Assistant is upping the ante to compete with devices like the new HomePod mini and the new Amazon Echo. You know that song you can't get out of your head but can't name it? Hum it out loud and Google Assistant can now name that earworm song for you.

For those who don't know if it's an actual melody or a made-up one, la di da and dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami dami Dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummy dummies. On the Google App or Google Assistant on your smartphone, say "What is this song?" and start humming for 10-15 seconds. If they know the lyrics, they can whistle or sing some of the lyrics.

This is basically Shazam, but better, and therefore one of the best Google Assistant commands; the Shazam app will tell you the name of a song playing on the radio, in a restaurant, or in a waiting room, but it is not very useful for finding songs you somehow know.

Google's machine learning algorithms can identify songs that may be a good match, even if they don't have perfect pitch. Of course, the better you sing the song, the better chance Google has of knowing it, but if you're frustrated by that nameless song repeating in your brain, it wouldn't hurt to try this new feature.

This feature is currently available in English on iOS and over 20 languages on Android. However, it is not available on Google Home speakers like Google Nest Audio or Google Nest Hub Max. Nevertheless, mobile-specific Google Assistant skills may be included in smart speakers.

"What's this song?" is the latest in a series of new Google Assistant features that have appeared in recent weeks. With Apple hoping to make Siri more famous with its $99 HomePod mini speaker, Alexa is no longer Google's only worthy opponent in the smart home arena.
