With only a month to go before launch, we finally have a better idea of how the PS5 will handle PS4 backward compatible games. And that's mostly good news, even though some older titles will be gathering dust.

Sony has released a new PlayStation support page detailing how backwards compatibility will work on the PS5. As Sony has previously stated, "the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 games" will work on the next-generation console. The company claims that some of these games will receive PS5 game boosts, which will result in higher and smoother frame rates. However, Sony has not stated which titles will benefit from these.

Sony also states that "some features that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on the PS5 console" for backward compatible games, and that "errors or unexpected behavior" may occur. The company also revealed that a very small number of PS4 games will not run on the PS5. Here is the full list:

Fortunately, this small list does not seem to include many popular titles (apologies to Joe's Diner fans).

Sony also outlines how to play both physical and digital PS4 games on the PS5, and both processes seem very easy. To play physical games, simply insert the disc and select the game from the home screen, while digital games can be transferred from the PS4 console via either external storage or Wi-Fi data transfer. One can also download owned digital games from the PS5's menu.

For PS4 games that offer an upgrade option to PS5 (such as "Marvel's Avengers"), the same procedure is followed, but you can also select the upgrade button that appears on the game hub. For Sony's detailed instructions, please click here.

When playing PS4 games on PS5, you will be able to use DualSense controllers, DualShock 4, and officially licensed third-party controllers (including racing wheels and arcade sticks). In addition, the PlayStation VR headset, PS Move controller, and PSVR Aim Controller can be used when playing PSVR games. As Sony has previously stated, the DualShock 4 controller cannot be used with PS5 games.

Sony also stated that the "Share" menu will replace the "Create" menu when capturing screen or video while playing PS4 games on the PS5. The new HD camera will not be compatible with PS4 games and will automatically turn on HDR during gameplay. In addition, the PS5 will not support PS4 tournaments or the In-Game Live from PlayStation feature.

Overall, it looks like you can bring most of your PS4 collection to the PS5 without any problems. That said, the Xbox Series X is already performing very impressively on older titles, so it will be interesting to see more about how comfortable these games will run on the new console.
