Trump now says stimulus1, 200 stimulus check can go out "soon"

Yesterday, President Trump appeared to have cut off talks on Stimulus 2, but has now expressed interest in signing a stand-alone bill that would allow for a second round of $1,200 in direct payments to eligible Americans.

On Tuesday, the President pulled the White House out of the negotiations and asked the Senate to prioritize hearings on Supreme Court nominees. He said the coronavirus stimulus package would happen after next month's elections. [He then reversed course again. Later Tuesday, Trump stated on Twitter the terms of signing the stimulus:

"If I am sent a stand-alone bill for the stimulus ($1,200), it will be immediately sent to our great people."

The President stated that he was "prepared to sign it right now" and addressed it to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

All of these individuals have been involved in the negotiations of the stimulus bill up to this point. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has also been a key player in the negotiations, although the President did not tag him.

It is unclear whether a stand-alone stimulus bill will have enough bipartisan support to reach the President's desk. Despite comments in support of "very generous" direct payments, the President has so far been unable to persuade negotiators to reach agreement on spending.

Perhaps that is why the President threatened yesterday to halt talks on the stimulus bill altogether, followed by this ultimatum.

The President did not share the guidelines he wanted for the amount of the second stimulus check, but said the payment would be $1,200. This means that the President is in favor of applying the amount of the first stimulus payment to the second.

Under the March CARES Act, the government sent $1,200 in benefits to singles with annual incomes up to $75,000 and married people with annual incomes up to $150,000.

Earners who exceeded these amounts by up to $99,000 and $198,000, respectively, received proportional checks. Income earners above the maximum received nothing.
