Huge Windows10 update can save your data — Here's how

One of the worst things that can happen to your PC is SSD failure; if your SSD fails, you could lose a huge amount of information. However, Windows 10 is about to save you from such a tragedy.

Build 20266, the latest preview build of Windows 10, includes a new storage health monitoring feature that alerts users if their SSD is in danger of failing. This feature is specifically configured to work with NVMe SSDs, which are growing in popularity and are found in many of the latest laptops.

"Trying to recover data after a drive failure can be frustrating and costly," Microsoft's Windows blog states.

"This feature is designed to detect hardware anomalies in NVMe SSDs and notify users in plenty of time. We strongly recommend backing up your data as soon as you receive the notification."

If you have access to the new Windows 10 Insider Preview build, you can access the new monitoring feature by going into the System Settings of your Windows 10 machine and navigating to the "Storage" section. From there, you need to click on "Disk and Volume Management" and then the "Properties" section, where you will be warned if the SSD is "unreliable."

In that case, Windows 10 recommends backing up the data on the SSD in case the SSD fails. In fact, it is recommended that you back up your important data to an external hard drive as well as to a cloud service, just in case.

The standard Windows 10 notification also immediately warns users of a possible SSD failure. Clicking on it will bring up options for managing and backing up files.

This feature is for members of the Windows Insider program, but is likely to be available to regular Windows 10 users as well. Perhaps this feature will be more easily accessible in Settings, rather than being buried under a series of menus.
