New iPhone12 case leak just revealed a huge design change

The rear camera block of the iPhone 12 appears to be significantly larger, judging by new images of a case made for it.

Twitter leaker LeaksApplePro managed to obtain images of a new transparent iPhone 12 case by case maker Speck. The package label doesn't say iPhone 12, but the 6.7" and 5.4" sizes make the match clear.

What is interesting is how much larger the iPhone 12 camera bump is compared to the iPhone 11. In this image, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is inside the iPhone 12 Pro Max case, and there is a lot of room around the triple camera block of the 11 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are widely rumored to add a LiDAR sensor to the existing triple camera array introduced in the iPhone 11 Pro. It is not known if Apple will change the main camera, ultra-wide camera, or telephoto camera in any way. However, adding another sensor to the camera block would mean a larger camera block and a larger opening in the case designed to house it.

This comparison is not perfect. According to leaked information, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be 6.7 inches wide, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 6.5 inches wide. Furthermore, the iPhone 12 has not yet been officially revealed, as the launch event is not expected to take place until October 13.

We've seen a slew of iPhone leaks over the past few months, as well as plenty of cases for the next generation Apple phones, thanks to both leaked and official schematics that case makers release their cases ahead of the phones they are made so often. This means that since the iPhone 12 design is finalized at this point, we're probably looking at products that will fit snugly around the iPhone 12.

Another image posted by LeaksApplePro shows the same Speck case design, but for the rumored 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini model. This is smaller than any notched full-screen iPhone we have seen so far, and could be a surprise hit for the iPhone 12 series, given that many users want a smaller device.

There is no phone to compare it to in this shot, but it appears to have a smaller camera bump than the 12 Pro Max, as one would expect from a phone with two fewer sensors.

However, we know from another case leak that the base iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are both 6.1 inches and fit into the same size case. Thus, the camera bumps on these phones, despite the different number of cameras, should be the same size, or at least both fit into the same size opening in the case. However, this may suggest that only the iPhone 12 Pro Max will require a larger camera bump because it will have a LiDAR sensor.

Other reasons to expect the iPhone 12 are the new chipset and display: the A14 Bionic chip, which just debuted in the iPad Air, brings more power and 5G compatibility to the iPhone series, and the new display is the all new iPhones will feature bright, colorful OLED panels for the first time. iPhone 12 Pro models may feature 120Hz displays, but there are conflicting rumors about that.
