WhatsApp just got a big upgrade — How to Use It Now

WhatsApp is making changes that will drastically reduce the amount of space on your phone.

WhatsApp is tweaking its storage settings in its beta version for Android, and according to WABetaInfo, the latest beta version (2.20.201.9) features a revamped UI for the app's storage usage section. Users can easily check their current usage on the storage bar, see the largest files received through the app, and approve WhatsApp's suggested cleanups to delete unwanted files.

Improvements to storage management have been in the works for several months and were discovered by WABetaInfo's research.

The current WhatsApp design allows users to see a list of chats and the storage space used by each chat. Files can be erased by file type (photos, GIFs, videos, etc.).

The new beta changes give users more control. They can review all files and sort them by size or date. The redesign features categories for large files and transferred files. And there is a tool to search for chats.

Currently, only WhatsApp beta Android users can take advantage of this redesigned storage setup. You will need to download the beta version 2.20.201.9.

To join the beta program for Android, sign up on the WhatsApp beta page on Google Play and fill out the required information. If you already have the public version of WhatsApp installed, it will automatically update to the beta version within a few hours.

Updates are provided gradually, so not all beta testers will receive the update immediately.

WhatsApp has not confirmed when the new "Storage Usage" section will be available.
