OnePlus8T Pro has not officially occurred — and that's a good thing

The OnePlus 8T will not officially have a Pro model when it goes on sale next month. But this is not necessarily a bad thing.

The news was posted by CEO Pete Lau on the Chinese social network Weibo. Using a translator for the text makes it clear that "there will be no 8T Pro this year" because OnePlus has other plans.

Lau said that the OnePlus 8 Pro should be the default choice for enthusiasts; the 8 Pro will likely continue to be sold along with the OnePlus 8T, but it is unclear what will happen to the standard OnePlus 8.

This was reaffirmed in a statement OnePlus made to AndroidCentral, in which the company said it "remains confident that the OnePlus 8 Pro remains one of the best smartphones in its class."

The statement continues: "With the OnePlus 8T, we felt that by upgrading a few key components, such as the 120Hz display, we could offer an even more competitive choice in the premium segment.

"Overall, we believe this will better balance our product portfolio and provide users with even better and smarter choices to choose from in each price category."

Last year we saw the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro launch around October; the OnePlus 7T was a huge leap in quality from the OnePlus 7, while the OnePlus 7T Pro was only slightly better than the original OnePlus 7 Pro The OnePlus 7T Pro was only slightly better than the original OnePlus 7 Pro.

With only one "T" model this time around, OnePlus can actually improve the model that needs improvement, while leaving the more expensive model for users who want to take advantage of different specs.

Based on leaked information so far, it may be difficult to choose between the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8T. Take, for example, the charging specs: the OnePlus 8 Pro is fast and versatile, offering 30W of wired and wireless charging; the 8T is not expected to feature wireless charging, but will have 65W of wired charging, one of the highest charging speeds to date.

As noted above, the OnePlus 8T will feature a 6.55-inch display with 120 Hz. This is a nice upgrade since the previous OnePlus 8 had a 90Hz display of the same size; the OnePlus 8 Pro has a larger 6.8-inch 120Hz display, which may be better or worse depending on preference.

This fall has seen a bit more inexpensive Android releases to make the flagship experience more affordable; besides the OnePlus 8T, the $699 Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has just been released. Samsung offers a 120Hz display, triple rear cameras, and a large 4,500mAh battery at a competitive price.

Similarly, tomorrow marks the launch of the Google Pixel 5, which offers less powerful hardware (Snapdragon 765 chip) than previous Pixels in order to focus on competitive pricing. It also expects an upgraded camera and a larger battery than the Pixel 4.

As for the OnePlus 8T, the launch is a bit further away, with an estimated date of October 14. However, official news will be released sooner than that, as OnePlus continues to reveal small details on a regular basis.
