Pixel 5 price just leaked - from Google itself

The Google Japan Twitter account accidentally posted a tweet about the Google Pixel 5, revealing its design and price just days before its official launch.

The tweet was hastily deleted, but 9to5Google discovered it and captured an image of the Pixel 5 before it was removed from Twitter. And that image corroborated the Pixel 5 design seen in previous leaks.

As many other leaks have revealed, this fortuitous post shows that the Pixel 5 will have a nearly bezel-less display with a punch-hole selfie camera. Unlike the smooth curved display edges of Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, there is still a prominent bezel around the phone's display, which is believed to be about 6 inches.

This gives the Pixel 5 the same practical design as the Pixel 4a. It is also expected to carry the same unpretentious design DNA of previous Pixel phones, with a simple rear design with dual or triple rear camera arrays. [This is because the Pixel 5 will use the mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip, as opposed to the high-end Snapdragon 8 series chips used in previous Pixel phones. Such a chip should allow the Pixel 5 to be priced below the flagships, which range from about $800 to $1,200.

And Google Japan coincidentally posted the Pixel 5's price in Japan, which is 74,800 yen. This translates to $700, clearly cheaper than the Pixel 4's launch price of $799.

However, this price conversion does not take into account pricing country differences or taxes, which we recommend taking with a grain of salt. However, the Pixel 5 is expected to be cheaper than its predecessor, and this coincidental tweet seems to confirm that rumor. Tipster Jon Prosser had previously claimed that the new model would cost $699.

In short, the Pixel 5 appears to be a pure Android phone that will omit the extra features of previous Pixel phones, especially the Soli radar chip of the Pixel 4, which gave it a large upper bezel.

The Pixel 5, which will be unveiled on September 30, is expected to include some clever software features, along with new Nest and Chromecast devices. But with the OnePlus 8T, Galaxy S20 FE, and iPhone 12 all launching within the next month or so, Google has some work to do to stand out among the big fall flagships.
