Get ready to toss a second coin with "The Witcher:" Netflix's "Blood Origins," a prequel spin-off series to the hit fantasy series "The Witcher."

In the summer, Netflix announced the production of Blood Origin." It is set 1,200 years before "Geralt of Rivia" (Henry Cavill) roamed the Northern Kingdom, "where the worlds of monsters, humans, and elves merged into one and the first Witcher was born.

"'The Witcher': Blood Origin" is a six-episode limited series that depicts the origins of the first Witcher and the events that led to the "joining of the spheres" where the worlds of monsters, humans, and elves merged into one.

The prequel will likely not feature the cast of The Witcher, but will involve the same people behind the scenes. Declan de Barra, the screenwriter of "The Witcher," will serve as showrunner, and Lauren Schmidt Hisrich, showrunner of "The Witcher," will serve as executive producer. In addition, Anjay Sapkowski, creator of The Witcher series, will join as creative consultant.

In a statement, de Barra said, "As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I couldn't be more excited about telling the story of 'The Witcher':. Ever since I first read the 'Witcher' books, a question has been burning in my mind.

"I have always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations. How science, discovery, and culture flourish just before their demise. Often, through colonization and the rewriting of history, vast amounts of knowledge are lost forever in a short period of time. Only fragments of the true story of civilization remain," he continued. In The Witcher: Blood Origins, the story of the Elven civilization before its demise will be told and, most importantly, the forgotten history of the first Witcher will be revealed."

Here is what we know so far about The Witcher: Blood Origin

Netflix has not announced a release date for The Witcher: Blood Origin.

According to Deadline, a prequel spinoff will be filmed in the UK, but no production start date has been set.

The Witcher itself is still in production on its second season. Filming was interrupted in March by a coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in the cancellation of most films and television shows. Cast member Christopher Hivju tested positive for COVID-19. The show resumed filming in August.

If "Blood Origins" followed a similar schedule as "The Witcher" Season 1, it would require approximately seven months of filming and five months of post-production. This means that even if "Blood Origins" begins shooting this fall, the earliest it could be released would be fall 2021. However, given that Netflix has "The Witcher" Season 2 coming out around the same time, the spinoff will likely wait until early 2022.

Since "Blood Origins" is set 1200 years before "The Witcher," it is unlikely that any of the show's cast, including Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Charotra, will be involved in the prequel.

However, some fans have come up with the idea of The Witcher: Blood Origins being narrated by traveling bard Yaskier (Joey Beatty), as if he were retelling the legend. This would tie the spinoff more directly to the flagship program.
