Apple Fitness Plus takes Peleton with live workouts and on-screen stats

Apple Fitness Plus is an all-new exercise suite that will be available to Apple Watch users later this year. The subscription service will offer 10 different studio workouts with built-in soundtracks from real trainers.

Apple Fitness Plus, introduced with Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE, is positioned as a wrist-based program but works with iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV to stream workout classes. Classes include yoga, treadmill, dance, and weight training.

When an Apple Fitness Plus subscriber starts a class on an iOS or tvOS device, workout tracking is automatically done on the watch. Real-time fitness metrics collected from the watch and ring progress will also be displayed on the screen.

And when class is over, users can see a comprehensive overview of their stats; Apple Music subscribers also have access to built-in training playlists of all genres. [Apple Fitness Plus costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year; those who purchase the Apple Watch Series 6 get three months free.

Of course, Apple Fitness Plus is also included in the Apple One bundle. The Premier tier, which costs $29.95/month, offers Fitness Plus in addition to Apple Music, TV Plus, Arcade, News Plus, and 2TB of iCloud storage.

Apple did not reveal an exact launch date for Fitness Plus, but said it should launch in select countries by the end of this year. When it does, it will compete with Fitbit Premium and Peloton, which are among the few fitness services connected directly to the hardware.

With gyms and in-person workout classes limited or suspended, these integrated programs have become a popular option for staying in shape.
