No, the new iPhone12 is not coming to today's Apple event — here's why

As I told a friend this past weekend, the iPhone 12 will not be unveiled at Apple's event today (September 15, 1 p.m. ET); since 2012, the new iPhone in September has been a tradition, but (as you already know) many traditions were broken this year.

So while your local cell phone store may have warned you about how Apple's September 15 event might affect your iPhone buying decision, you probably got your hopes up to learn why they were wrong you need to keep reading.

First of all, Apple itself confirmed the iPhone 12 delay when Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri announced during an earnings call in July that the new product would be available a few weeks later than that this year. This positioned Apple to hold an iPhone 12 event in October 2020.

And yes, Maestri is saying that the change in supply is related to the relocation because he is very aware of how COVID-19 has affected the company's ability to manufacture and deliver its products.

And last Tuesday, after the invitations for Apple's "Time Flies" event were sent out, Bloomberg confirmed what we had expected, that Apple is working on a "high-end and low-end Apple Watch" and an "edge-to-edge screen," and a "redesigned iPad Air with an edge-to-edge screen.

This means we can expect an Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE. There should also be a new iPad Air 4 with a full-screen design and Magic Keyboard support. A more affordable iPad Pro, but with only one rear camera and no Face ID.

And yesterday (September 14), Jon Prosser, a tech leaker at Front Page tech, uploaded a new video about the rumored Apple AirTags and stated that "they are not going to announce iPhone 12 tomorrow." While Prosser's prediction is not perfect (he claimed that the Apple Watch 6 would be announced in a press release on September 8, only to receive an invitation to the event instead), everything else we know confirms this.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if many are disappointed that there was no iPhone 12 announcement today. Maybe Apple will give it a preview to acknowledge tradition, but beyond that (maybe announce a date for the October event?), I'm not sure.

According to Apple Insider, investment bank Wedbush sent a note to investors saying that today's event raises expectations for an iPhone 12 event, which could be as early as the first week of October. They did not clarify whether Apple was referring to the iPhone 12 or to a future event.

Therefore, potential iPhone upgraders, you will likely have to wait a little longer to see the iPhone 12. I have also advised those who think they will be happy with the iPhone 11 to wait until October to make that call.

Because while the tradition of a new iPhone being announced in September may end this year, there is no reason for Apple to discount the iPhone a month early.
