CBS All Access is called Paramount Plus, but why?

CBS All Access will soon sleep with the fishes and kiss the Paramount+ ring. [CBS All Access will be reborn as Paramount Plus in early 2021 CBS All Access will be reborn as Paramount Plus in early 2021. The service will stream news, live sports and content from the newly merged Viacom and CBS Corp. archives. Its library will include shows and movies from CBS and cable stations MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Network, and Nickelodeon.

Paramount Plus will also take over CBS All Access originals like Star Trek: Picard and The Good Fight and add new titles like the Godfather series.

CBS All Access first launched in October 2014 as one of the first standalone streaming services by a television network. Subscriptions start at $6 per month and provide access to a library that includes the current hits "Survivor" and "Big Brother" as well as originals such as "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek: Discovery." As of the end of June, CBS All Access and Showtime combined had 16.2 million subscribers.

Rumors of a name change by ViacomCBS have been swirling for months. Recently, the company has been adding more content to its cable properties to CBS All Access, with plans to build a library of 30,000 TV episodes and movies.

"Paramount is an iconic and venerable brand loved by consumers around the world and synonymous with quality, integrity, and world-class storytelling," CEO Bob Bakish said in a statement.

"With Paramount+, we are excited to leverage the breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to establish a single global streaming brand in the broad pay segment that offers a great collection of content for everyone.

In addition to the new name change, the streaming distributor is developing a series based on one of Paramount Studios' most iconic films, The Godfather. The film trilogy was added to CBS All Access this summer (though not exclusively, as the movies are also streaming on Peacock). The Offer is a scripted limited series that chronicles the making of the Oscar-winning first film from the perspective of producer Al Radi.

Other new shows in production at Paramount Plus include:

Currently, CBS All Access is $5.99/month with ads and $9.99/month without ads; ViacomCBS did not announce new pricing plans after the 2021 rebranding.

In the U.S., Showtime will continue its own independent streaming service. Overseas, Paramount Plus will bring in premium network content.
