If you were hoping that the new iPhone 12 Pro lineup would include a 120Hz display, you're in for some bad news.

According to a new research note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (as reported by 9to5Mac), Kuo does not expect the iPhone 12 models to feature 120Hz displays due to battery life concerns. But it's not all bad news.

The analyst said that the battery capacity of this year's iPhone 12 will be smaller than that of the iPhone 11, and that a 120Hz panel will "significantly impair the user experience."

Our own tests have shown that Android phones set to 120Hz mode do not hold a charge for 1.5 to 3 hours longer than those set to 60Hz mode, such as the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Perhaps Apple did not want to take such a risk, especially since 5G wireless could degrade power.

Kuo has stated that 120Hz displays could be offered in the 2021 iPhone.

There is a bit of good news in this latest report: the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 is said to have a narrower notch, which would be an improvement in Apple's design. The move is said to make it easier to display information in the upper left or right corner.

However, Kuo states that the notch will not change in the 6.1-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 lineup may also finally reveal something about 5G connectivity. Kuo believes that there will be two versions of each iPhone 12 model, for a total of eight devices.

One version will support only sub-6GHz 5G with wider range but slower speeds, while the other batch will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz. Currently, Verizon 5G is leading in mmWave deployments, with a growing number of cities offering speeds above 1 Gbps, but only in limited areas.

The iPhone 12 Pro should stand out from the regular iPhone 12 in other ways, if the 120Hz display is indeed dead. iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max should be useful for augmented reality applications as well as photography They should offer a third telephoto camera, along with a LiDAR sensor.

The iPhone 12 Pro models are also expected to feature more RAM than the regular iPhone 12 lineup and a stainless steel band for a more premium look.

An Apple Event will be held tomorrow (September 15), where the Apple Watch 6 and iPad Air 4 are expected to be announced, and the new iPhones will likely have their own event in October.
