These AmazonBasics products are on Fire — What You Need to Know

Amazon's own products, called AmazonBasics, are catching fire for some customers, according to a new CNN report. [CNN found that the popular AmazonBasics USB cables, surge protectors, and microwave ovens are among at least 70 electronic devices that have been cited as fire hazards in more than 1,500 reviews since 2016. AmazonBasics devices are more than 5,000 in all, many of which are labeled as best sellers.

In addition, according to CNN, about 30 products with multiple reviews of interest remain listed on Amazon's website. However, at least 11 products have been removed from Amazon's marketplace since CNN began its investigation.

While these harrowing experiences represent only a small fraction of AmazonBasics users, these stories are frightening enough to suggest that those devices be replaced with something with less explosive reviews.

At least one person has been hospitalized for a fire caused by an AmazonBasics USB cord, and an 8-year-old child was making macaroni and cheese when an AmazonBasics microwave oven caught fire.

For customer anecdotes and images, it is worth checking out the entire CNN report. The study provides background on the AmazonBasics brand and a list of electronics and appliances that have "fire," "dangerous," or "burns" in their reviews.

In response to CNN's report, Amazon issued a statement addressing concerns about AmazonBasics' safety.

Amazon also stated that once existing AmazonBasics products are launched and made available to customers, additional testing at third-party labs will be conducted to ensure that those products continue to meet our safety, quality, and compliance standards We conduct audits, including AmazonBasics also actively monitors customer reviews and customer inquiries for any safety-related feedback and takes any necessary action. This action may include removing a product from the store, adjusting the product's design, notifying customers to discontinue using the product, or any other appropriate action.

Amazon also stated that it has only recalled two AmazonBasics products since 2009.

If you have an AmazonBasics device for which CNN has issued a warning, it is likely worth replacing it if you have the means to do so. If you do not intend to replace it, use caution when operating the device.

As for USB cords and surge protectors, consider leaving them unplugged when not in use and keeping them away from combustible materials when in use.

If you suspect you are using these products, CNN advises you to check your order history and compare the identification number of the electronic device you purchased with the devices listed as potentially dangerous.
