While Samsung is touting the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra's 108MP camera and powerful 50x zoom, Apple seems to be going in a different direction with its iPhone 12 camera.

A new report from Digitimes seems to confirm that Apple will use a 7P lens module for its iPhone 12 lineup.

According to Wccftech, the advantage of the 7P lens (seven optical elements) is that it improves image quality by increasing light transmission. The current iPhone 11 Pro uses a 5P lens for the ultra-wide camera and a 6P lens for the wide and telephoto cameras.

Additionally, according to this new report, the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a 1/1.9-inch 7P wide-angle lens that supports sensor shift technology. We first reported on the iPhone 12's move to sensor shift in December, based on another report from Digitimes.

Most cameras today have lens-based image stabilization. Sensor-shift image stabilization, however, uses a gyroscope to detect motion in all directions, and the processor interprets this motion and activates actuators on the sensor to compensate. The result should be clearer photos and videos, with no unwanted movement in all axes.

According to previous leaks, the iPhone 12's 12MP sensor will be larger and capture more light. The iPhone 12 Pro model will also have a LiDAR sensor, which should improve autofocus and low-light performance, as well as provide better portraits.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 12 Pro is rumored to feature only 2x or 3x optical zoom. However, in terms of overall image quality, Apple may outperform its competitors.
