A Nintendo Switch with 4K games may be imminent — here's the proof

The possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 (or Switch Pro) seems to be growing more and more likely, with recent leaks indicating that an upgraded version of the Switch will launch in 2021. And we have another major piece of evidence that a major power upgrade is on the way.

According to a new Bloomberg report (via Nintendo Life), Nintendo is asking game developers to make their games playable in 4K resolution. This follows a previous Bloomberg report that a more powerful, 4K-capable Nintendo Switch is in development for next year.

While there are currently no details on what specs the new Nintendo Switch may feature, Bloomberg previously noted that the system will likely launch with a large lineup of new first- and third-party games to entice players to upgrade Bloomberg noted that the system is likely to be released with a lineup of new first- and third-party games to entice players to upgrade. Spec leaks so far have been mixed, with some claiming that the Switch 2 may feature a powerful Nvidia Tegra Xavier processor and 64GB of SSD storage, while others point to more subtle upgrades.

Nintendo is no stranger to console iterations, having released frequent upgrades to its DS and 3DS handhelds over the past decade. Last year the company released a refreshed Nintendo Switch with improved battery life and a less expensive handheld-only Switch Lite.

With the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S all launching this holiday season, it makes sense for Nintendo to offer a higher-performance Switch option to attract gamers looking for better performance. It may not be able to keep up with the ray tracing and 120fps frame rates of these consoles, but it will make titles like Mario, Zelda, and The Witcher look better.
