OnePlus8T Leak Reveals End of OnePlus Era

OnePlus8T Leak Reveals End of OnePlus Era

Debuting later this year, the OnePlus 8T could launch on its own. According to a new rumor, there will be no OnePlus 8T Pro to accompany this flagship smartphone.

The OnePlus 8T rumor is based on a post by Twitter leaker Max J., which has the phrase "kebab2" covered with "no symbol."

To give background to this strange-looking image, MaxJ had previously leaked that the codename for the OnePlus 8T is "kebab". Thus, this image tells us that there will not be a second "kebab" model. It will be interesting to see if this is because the OnePlus 8T Pro was cancelled or because OnePlus never planned to release such a model in the first place.

OnePlus introduced a Pro variant of the device with the OnePlus 7 Pro in early 2019 and followed it with the OnePlus 7T Pro later that year. More recently, the OnePlus 8 Pro debuted in April along with the OnePlus 8. So while still a young tradition, it is fairly well established

The OnePlus Nord, released in August, currently offers the cheapest ticket to the OnePlus lifestyle, putting the OnePlus 8 in an awkward spot: at $699, the Nord costs about $150 more than the 8, but has three fewer cameras. Meanwhile, the 8 is similar in size and build to the 8 Pro, but lacks some of the Pro model's best features, such as the 120Hz display and telephoto camera.

It makes a lot of sense for OnePlus to ditch the "Pro" label and make its numbered flagship models luxurious by default, and for Nord to cater to those who want OnePlus phones at a lower price. And with more Nord series rumored to be on the way by the end of the year, we may see an even more diverse OnePlus family in the near future.

An earlier big OnePlus 8T leak revealed by Android Central was pretty big, citing a OnePlus insider, and showed that the new phone will have a Snapdragon 865 Plus system-on-chip, 8GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, four rear cameras, and a 6.55-inch 120Hz display. The 8T also has Android 11 installed from the start in the form of OxygenOS 11.

Leaks aside, we can make many assumptions based on previous T versions of OnePlus phones. The new phone will likely be priced similarly to the original OnePlus 8/8Pro, except with different color options and perhaps a single choice of storage capacity. Interior changes are rumored, but there will likely be no major changes to the exterior design.
