The release date of Google Pixel5 has just been leaked — here's when it comes

We know the release date for the Google Pixel 5 is this fall, but a new leak suggests it will arrive at the end of September.

According to internal documents from telecom carrier Vodafone discovered by Teckcheck (via GSMArena), the Pixel 5 will arrive in German stores on September 25. This suggests that the launch event is imminent and the release of Google's next flagship phone is just two weeks away.

The document also states that the Pixel 4a 5G will launch on the same day, and since the Pixel 5 is expected to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G, a mid-range 5G-enabled chip, Google is hoping to make the list of best phones this fall by putting two 5G phones will be competing against each other.

In this leak, there was no information on pricing, despite the fact that the document was intended for retailers. However, previous leaks have priced the Pixel 5 at 629 euros, roughly $699. This is about $100 less than the Pixel 4's launch price, which may not be too surprising given that the Pixel 5 will feature a mid-range chipset.

The document only lists black color options for both models, which may suggest that Google may only offer one color for the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G to streamline production. The coronavirus pandemic is believed to have disrupted Google's Pixel 5 roadmap. Therefore, we would not be surprised if Google decides to cut back on color and storage options for the Pixel 5.

Speaking of which, the entry-level Pixel 4 model comes with 64 GB of storage, which is a rather small amount considering that Pixel phones are rather photo-centric. For that reason, we rather expect Google to make 128GB of storage space standard on the Pixel 5. We also expect an increase in RAM, which could be raised from 6GB to 8GB.

Other rumored Pixel 5 spec upgrades include a 6.67-inch display and an upgrade from a 2,800mAh battery to a 4,000mAh battery. Earlier leaks indicated that the battery would be 3,080 mAh.

The Pixel 4 now has two rear cameras, a standard and a telephoto. Given the trend toward more cameras on the back of smartphones, it is expected that the Pixel 5 will likely have three rear cameras and add a wide-angle lens, which the Pixel 4 did not have.

If the Pixel 5 does indeed launch on September 25, it could appear at the same time as the iPhone 12. This is a dangerous position to be in, as leaked information suggests that Apple's next smartphone will offer a significant upgrade over the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

If the Pixel 5 costs $699, it would be roughly the same price as Apple's entry-level iPhone 12, which is expected to feature a much smaller 5.4-inch display The Pixel 5 would undercut Samsung's Galaxy S20, which is considerably more expensive at $999 Samsung is also reportedly preparing a less expensive Galaxy S20 Lite, although it will cost $999.
