Nvidia RTX3080 can be very hard to find at launch — here's why

If you're drooling over upcoming GPUs like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or the beastly RTX 3090, you might want to keep your credit card handy and your hands on the keyboard and mouse. These attractive new cards are likely to be extremely scarce, and getting your hands on one (or two) may be difficult for the foreseeable future.

According to TweakTown, Nvidia's new Ampere GPUs are very likely to be hard to find until at least 2021. In fact, the same source notes that the first wave of cards could be "the smallest release in years. This is bad news for those who have been waiting patiently to get their hands on one of these new releases, especially with graphics-intensive games coming later this year.

According to TweakTown, Nvidia's new Ampere GPUs are very likely to be hard to find until at least 2021, and industry sources say that once the cards are released, inventory will be "extremely low" through the end of the year and possibly even beyond After the card goes on sale, inventory will be "extremely low" through the end of the year and possibly beyond, according to industry sources. In fact, the same sources noted that the first wave of cards could be the "smallest release in years. This is bad news for those who have been patiently waiting to get their hands on one of these new releases, especially with graphics-intensive games coming later this year.

Why are new GPUs in short supply? It has to do with yields in Samsung's 8nm process, which Nvidia is reportedly hoping to maximize. Until then, Nvidia is considering reducing production until it reaches a satisfactory target; there is also the issue of AMD's RDNA 2 debut; Nvidia wants to observe how the upcoming Big Navi GPU will compete with the current Ampere card line.

Even if the cards were not already scheduled to be released in small quantities for the reasons mentioned above, the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 are very affordable and desirable GPUs in terms of price; even the RTX 3070, which costs $499, beats the current RTX 2080 Ti by a wide margin. Upgrading to the RTX 3080, which is only a few hundred dollars more, will give you even more power.

The RTX 3090's price jumps significantly, but it's also worth it: with over 10,000 CUDA cores and 24GB of GDDR6X memory, the 3090 will be something special in terms of performance. Priced at $1,499, it also promises to deliver smooth gameplay at 60 frames per second at 8K resolution.

The clock is ticking on the new lineup of cards: the RTX 3080 will debut on September 17, with the big-boy RTX 3090 due on September 24; the RTX 3070 is a little further away, expected in October; and the RTX 3090 is expected to be released on September 23. For now, if you want one of these cards for yourself, you'll likely have to do the fastest draw on the Internet. Your best bet is to sign up on Nvidia's official website and have them notify you by e-mail when you can reserve one.
