Information about the purported specs of the iPhone 12 Pro Max was leaked on Twitter by tipster @LeaksApplePro, revealing that it will be a significant upgrade over the iPhone 11 Pro Max. But there's more behind the scenes.

LeaksApplePro has a mixed track record of accurate leaks, but they claim that the new information comes from "a trusted source who got a lot of things right" and that the specs are from screenshots of marketing materials. Either way, the leakers have leaked a lot of information about the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This will come as no surprise to followers of the Apple iPhone 12 rumors that have percolated over the past eight months. The presence of a new A14 Bionic chip with a fourth-generation Neural Engine is to be expected, as the iPhone 12 Pro Max was always going to be an upgrade over the previous A13 Bionic model. And the presence of IP68 splash, water, and dust resistance is incredibly shrugged off.

Another batch of leaked specs suggests that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a 6.7-inch True Tone OLED display with HDR and a resolution of 2788 x 284. Quite oddly, there was no mention of the 120 Hz refresh rate currently expected on the iPhone 12 Pro model.

Things get a bit more interesting when it comes to camera specs: according to information from LeaksApplePro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a triple rear camera array consisting of 16MP cameras in wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto configurations. These cameras will then be supported by a LiDAR sensor, which is believed to be a feature of the Pro Max model only.

As Front Page Tech's Jon Prosser leaked in a major iPhone 12 leak this week, the LiDAR sensor is expected to help with autofocus and subject detection when using the phone's camera for video recording or night mode. In addition, the LiDAR sensor should provide better performance in iPhone AR apps.

The camera's aperture range is the same as that of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but it will have an "advanced night mode" that will allow 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second. iPhone 11 Pro Max only had 1080p, but 4K will allow 120fps or 240 fps slow motion video recording will be possible.

Much of this information is consistent with Prosser's leaks, which are known for their accuracy. However, one tweet in the iPhone 12 Pro Max information thread details the phone's camera capabilities.

Sadly, these appear to be consistent with those of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, with both models featuring a series of effects for "Next Generation Smart HDR" and "Portrait Lighting" modes. This raises eyebrows at the validity of the leak.

Prosser seems to share the same view, telling @LeaksApplePro, "Yes. No." Prosser did not explain his sharp response. However, it has sparked many to question the accuracy of the leak.

With the iPhone 12 series due to be unveiled in September or early October, there isn't much time to know which leaks are accurate. When we will get the new iPhones is the trickier question, as the releases could be staggered.
