Apple is creating AR content for iPhone12 and Apple Glasses

Next year, Apple TV Plus will add augmented reality (AR) content that will allow users to superimpose characters and objects from the streaming service's programming onto real-world environments. From rumors of Apple's AR glasses and recent news that an Apple VR headset is in development, it appears that the company is betting big on bringing these technologies to the masses.

Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to add AR companion content to its library of original productions. This would be a bonus feature, like a director's commentary, that comes with movies and TV shows, and could be accessed through the Apple TV app on the iPhone and iPad.

"For example, someone watching the moonwalking scene in Apple's show 'For All Mankind' might be able to see a virtual lunar rover on the device's display that looks like it's sitting on the living room coffee table," Bloomberg report explains.

This AR content will be rolled out next year, and Apple reportedly intended to debut it this fall. However, the Coronavirus outbreak interrupted both software development and film production, leading to this delay. Bloomberg notes that Apple may even cancel the project altogether.

Still, augmented reality is an important focus for Apple. Earlier this year, the company added a LiDAR sensor to the iPad Pro 2020 to improve the augmented reality experience and apps. iPhone 12 is also rumored to include LiDAR.

Apple Glasses are almost confirmed and could debut as early as next year. And in addition to the augmented reality class, Apple is reportedly developing a VR headset with advanced features and ultra-high-resolution screens for 2022.

As for AR content for Apple TV Plus, if it rolls out this fall, it could be a way to encourage new users to sign up and existing users to re-register. This streaming service was launched last fall, and many users are still taking advantage of the one-year free trial agreements included with the purchase of Apple products. The first expiration date for these trial accounts is November 1.

Apple is trying other ways to attract and retain subscribers, such as creating podcasts of top shows and offering bundled deals with CBS All-Access and Showtime. And Apple TV Plus will be included in the Apple One service bundle, which is rumored to launch this fall along with iPhone 12 and Apple Watch 6.
